🌡️ Central India Reels Under Scorching Heatwave – IMD Warns of 45°C Temperatures

April 22, 2025 | India Weather Update

As summer tightens its grip, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a severe heatwave alert across several parts of Central India, forecasting temperatures to touch 45°C in the coming days.

🔔 IMD Issues Heatwave Warning

According to the IMD bulletin, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and parts of Vidarbha (Maharashtra) are expected to face extreme weather conditions between April 22 and April 24. These areas may witness:

  • Daytime temperatures exceeding 44–45°C
  • Hot and dry northwesterly winds
  • Increased risk of heat stroke and dehydration

“A heatwave is declared when the maximum temperature is 4.5°C or more above normal. Current observations indicate intense heating over Central India due to prolonged dry spells and clear skies,” said an IMD spokesperson.

📍 States Under High Alert

The following regions are likely to be most affected:

  • Madhya Pradesh (Bhopal, Gwalior, Khargone)
  • Chhattisgarh (Raipur, Bilaspur, Durg)
  • Vidarbha region (Nagpur, Akola, Amravati)

Residents have been advised to stay indoors, especially between 12 PM to 4 PM, and to stay hydrated at all times.

🏥 Health Advisory

Local health departments have ramped up awareness campaigns to combat rising cases of:

  • Heat stroke
  • Sunburn
  • Fatigue and headaches

Doctors recommend: ✅ Drinking plenty of fluids
✅ Wearing loose, light-colored cotton clothing
✅ Avoiding strenuous outdoor activities during peak hours

📈 Impact on Daily Life

  • Power consumption has surged due to heavy use of air conditioning and coolers
  • Farmers have reported early signs of heat stress on crops in some dryland zones
  • Schools in select districts may adjust timings or suspend outdoor activities temporarily

🌍 Climate Experts Speak

Climate scientists warn that frequent and intense heatwaves are becoming the new normal due to climate change. India has already seen record-breaking summers in recent years, and 2025 appears to be no exception.

“Urban heat islands make cities especially vulnerable. Without mitigation and adaptive infrastructure, heatwaves could have long-term economic and health consequences,” warned Dr. Anjali Mehra, climate scientist.

🗓️ Looking Ahead

The IMD predicts some relief by the weekend, as a western disturbance may bring scattered showers over North India, which could help reduce temperatures marginally in surrounding regions.

📢 Stay Safe, Stay Cool!

Citizens are urged to follow government guidelines and watch for updates from the IMD. Emergency helplines are active in most districts to assist in heat-related emergencies.
